<reviewbody>ok, i've been waiting for this one for a long time. i can belabor how important this show is to me, but i won't. suffice it to say that this show has accompanied many a candle-lit evening for nary twenty years.

the issue here is sound. the resonance on audience recordings is my preferred choice. the civic center rang with phil and sustained notes that shook the rafters while the high end snuck underneath like a slinky serpent. for that, the audience recordings are superior. however, the fob is nefariously lacking in the drums to space segue which is, to me, what this show is all about, "the meat" as it were.

a preferable solution -- if there are any tech wizards who would take notice -- would be to graft the missing drums into space portion onto/into the fob, perhaps even tracking some audience there as well from the ouade. sounds complicated, complex and labor intensive, yes, but this is a magical show. it has that "je ne sais quois" of energy that a lot of shows couldn't recapture after jerry's '86 illness. call it controlled wild abandon.

nonetheless, having seen reviews from 9-18-87, this is my '80s answer to the cornell '77 dew. what it lacks in perfection and rock and roll, it makes up for in depth of soul. ahh, the good ole grateful dead. (not five stars because i still yearn for the *perfect* audience).</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>This is another one of those times where they bury the fine print. While the source is ID'ed as a Master Soundboard Cassette, check out the text file and find out that from mid-UJB until the end of the show there is an AUD patch. This really burns me up because that part of the show that is MSC is really high quality, whereas the AUD patch is decent, not great. It turns what was probably a 4.5 show into something less, which is too bad, because this show does have some fine moments .. the UJB and Morning Dew especially, during the 2d set. I will say that while this is a fine fine Dew, comparisons to Cornell, or even the 9/18/87 version are a bit of a stretch.

Had this MSC been a full show, I'd give it a 4, the AUD patch drops it down to a 3.

My tape of this show began with Cold Rain & Snow
and is still aurally superior (despite a little hiss) to any of the editions in the archive.
Am still a bit of a luddite and havent the ability to up load but would galdly make the tape or disc available to someone who could. CR&S> Sailor > Saint are an amazing groove and Dont Need Love is a rare treat. The Dew is Amazing....</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>I agree, this is a solid show. Stranger, Cold Rain and Snow, the Dew are very noice. However, this recording has a sporadic static that seems to be limited to the left channel. In either event, it is very annoying. I will keep this one for posterity but it won't get much play time.</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>Stranger. Nuf said. One of the better ones ever. Long and tight.

A sweet 1st set really. Music Never Stopped crackles with energy. Jack-A-Roe is rocking.

The only negative with this show is the shocking cut mid-way through UJB as the board goes awol. I wonder where the rest of the show is...
Hopefully its residing in the vaults somewhere.

I think I might actually buy it if it comes out.

legit 4.5 stars for the playing (5 goes to the Cornell's etc..)

2 stars for the awol 2nd set.

<reviewbody>I remember this being the tape to get from this tour

The Stranger opener is fierce, lots of reverb on the vocals, ‘if this were love,’
‘It must have been the Roses’ did not get played all the time so it gets cheers right out of the gate, (Jerry sounds like the Maine chilly air has gotten to him, Brent helps out nicely with some backing vocals.)
On the Road Again-very rare electric version! A Quick time Jack –A-Roe ‘This couple they got married’ (Let the dance marathon begin). Used to LOVE Her-Another tune not always a regular, (Bobby sounds hoarse too!) Funky Cumberland Blues (Love the girl, hate the mines), MUSIC!!! Nice hot jam to end set. ’full of singing and romancing’

Rain & Snow ‘married me a wife’ Sailor>Saint (Why did this couple part)
Don’t Need Love: You know this was before Brent had taken center stage and this song rubbed many people the wrong way. Sounds like the blues too me! The way Brent presents this tune is part of the problem; it is kind of an awkward song at times. But I know what the man was feeling!
This was the show I believe where Jerry walked off during ‘Don’t Need Love’ and came back to lead the band into a heartfelt ‘Uncle John’s’ –We do NEED LOVE!
The Drums and Space are nice; this was one of those very small venues the Dead would squeeze in off the beaten path, as you can tell- well worth the effort to be at such an intimate show.

I have just read the rest of the reviews. Yes, there are sound quality issues but if we are just talking which show just kills for this East Coast tour and has a dream set list that is very well played -this show gets my vote.

I like the comments about ‘LOVE’ posted by SFCwent, Love seem to be the common theme of this show, almost all the tunes have a tie in to love in some way.

Post Drumz--------Playin >Uncle John’s Reprise > DEW!

<reviewbody>This show goes down as my favorite of 1984;On this night I brought in 38 pounds of digital audio processing equiptment on my back and connected to some nak mic's on shotguns on either side of the soundboard.I lost count at about twenty five d-5 cassette recorders running from behind my d/a signal. On this night everything went right and I walked with the un-interrupted master.
instead of Drums and then Space this night it seemed like the jamming started towards the end of don't need love and carried right on thru Morning Dew.(minus space).
in retrospect,it was worth boiling my pet lobster before this show (the poor thing).
Nice hearing the soundboard.

<reviewbody>A big crew drove up from Middlebury College to catch this run in Augusta, and we were well rewarded for our efforts.

These two Augusta shows were a perfect combo, and while 10/12 is the superior show, both were tremendous fun.

My friends and I were all "dialed in" properly both nights, as I think a huge chunk of the crowd was. The whole scene was a blast outside and inside the civic center (though I do recall seeing bogus tour tickets being sold for $20).

The 12th was a high-energy burner from the outset and was incredible throughout. I'm pretty sure the long whistle you hear in Cold Rain & Snow is my pal Mark. I hadn't listened to this show for a while, but it sure brought back memories.

I just caught two very fun Lesh shows in NYC during his long run at the Nokia, and as good as those shows sounded, it's plain to see that there was nothing like a GD concert. No knock against Phil. But when the Dead delivered the goods, no matter the era, the music took you places that no other group can (at least to this fan).

Definitely a top-5 among the 150 shows I saw from 1977-1995.</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>I was at these shows. I recall it being the first tour that had booklets for all shows on a tour, and after giving away our Worcester tix in richmond headed home to the Blue ridge Mountains where our transmission went out. Finally got our tour mate to use his car. 2 of us were ready to hitch to Maine, but it was not nessesary and we made it . The Niagra Falls show in the spring had me willing to follow this Band wherever to get that loving feeling. I really think that the Band loved Maine ,because all of the shows I saw there were superb. These being my first there, and what a 2 night stand it was split Playing (reprise the second night ) everything great . I remember the El Paso from Hartford (next stop)First since the death of Marty Robbins. Anyway if you were at this venue , and at that 1 hotel that shared a parking lot then you went on a TRIP</reviewbody>
